Business and Psychology — Sales strategy version

As I get off a call with my mentee from business school, I am impressed by how he is shaping up. It’s typical for students to be very motivated and give back to to the industry as they learn new strategies. It is a nice feeling and it did rub off on me. One strategy that Omkar shared with me is called the 4 layered networking framework. I am excited to pen it down and compare it with all the health knowledge I am learning from refreshing my psychology minor at USC.

My mentee used this Netflix analogy, I do need to give credit to Omkar Deshpande, because of his excitement to share what he learnt, got me excited to share this knowledge too, but my way!

  • First layer of networking

There is a product — his analogy was Netflix — how Netflix has content and they are trying to share their product with a larger network. There are producers who are trying to create content and Netflix is sharing it further.

My analogy — your biggest asset is the brain, you need to preserve it and share with the world what you are learning. Knowledge sharing!

  • Second layer of networking

Netflix has to get the content out — there is an audience, second layer is to get the content out on the platform

My analogy and also analyses is the impact of getting this information out. There is an example in the book “Change your Brain, Change your Life” — two couples got into a therapy room, got all the information out, they kept harbouring over the same issues, and eventually the psychiatrist got them to do a brain scan. Turns out there was a lot of activity in their cingulate area. Solution was Zoloft.

My analyses — Get your product out, however be ready for the perception, analyses and feedback.

  • Third layer of networking

Netflix has an audience and you want to expand to a broad audience, including young adults, teens, low-middle-income families, and tech-savvy users, Netflix target audience.

My analogy for this one is knowledge sharing can be beneficial to a larger audience if the other party is equally interested in the knowledge you wish to share.

I have personally experienced at work, having shared knowledge and at times there is no reciprocation, so best to put a pause on it.

This knowledge sharing with my mentee Omkar Deshpande, he shared something and I worked off of it to share my perspective. Sorry Omkar it happened over Medium rather than over a call!

  • Fourth layer of networking

The final layer as my mentee described was — sharing the content with your peers.

From a mental awareness perspective. When you have a mental health issue, do share it with someone and get help! However in the US you have resources through international organisations. In India, the perception is changing and organisations are becoming more aware of the issues.

My analysis working off of Omkar’s analyses — that peer networking, isn’t so bad after all!

Having experienced the corporate world for a few years, experiencing stress and anxiety with the addition of some wonderful conversations. These analogies were necessary to highlight how important mental health conversations are. My interest in psychology has peaked and interest in business had always been there. So more analogies coming your way.

Hope you enjoyed reading this brief strategy and psychology piece.
